Art as a Door and a Mirror
At Healing Balkans, we believe that healing begins when difficult stories can be seen, felt, and shared.
Art has a unique ability to illuminate experiences that often remain beyond words, creating space for reflection, dialogue, and transformation.
As our friend Samar Haddad King shared during the December 2025 collaboration between Healing Balkans, SARTR, and the Palestinian-American Yaa Samar Dance Theatre:
“Art is either a door or a mirror.”
In that sense, art is a powerful healing medicine, allowing us to enter the sacred space of what needs to be felt, seen, or understood.
About the Performance
This summer, we are honored to support WALL 2026 — a powerful new multimedia theatrical work that explores the visible and invisible walls that shape our lives, communities, and histories.
Directed by Bosnian and internationally acclaimed artist Šejla Kamerić, the performance premieres July 3 and 4, 2026, bringing together voice, movement, music, and text to examine enduring themes of survival, resistance, memory, and human connection.
Through a remarkable collaboration of artists and performers affiliated with SARTR, WALL 2026 invites audiences to engage with questions that resonate deeply across generations and borders.
Our Partnership with SARTR
For Healing Balkans, this collaboration carries special significance.
We are proud to partner with SARTR (Sarajevo War Theatre) for the second time, supporting a cultural institution whose history embodies resilience, courage, and the enduring power of artistic expression.
Founded during the siege of Sarajevo in 1992, SARTR emerged as an act of cultural resistance and has remained a vital space for dialogue, critical reflection, and creative freedom ever since. Through this continued collaboration, we reaffirm our shared belief that art can help communities confront difficult histories, restore connection, and contribute to individual and collective healing.
Why This Matters
Supporting artistic projects such as WALL 2026 reflects our commitment to creating spaces where personal and collective healing can emerge.
We believe that cultural expression plays an essential role in helping us move beyond walls, strengthen a sense of community, and imagine new possibilities for the future.
